What is a pulmonary function test?

A Pulmonary Function Test (PFT) is a series of tests that measures how well your lungs function. They check how well you breathe in and out and how well your lungs bring oxygen into your blood. PFTs are also called lung function tests/spirometry tests.

Why is it done?

Your doctor might ask for a PFT if you have symptoms like a cough or trouble breathing. The tests can help find out if you have lung problems. Your doctor might order a PFT during a regular check-up, even if you have no symptoms.

Reasons for a PFT

Check for chest pain, tightness, or pressure
See why you are coughing, especially if you cough up mucus
Find out why you have trouble breathing or taking a deep breath
Understand why you feel short of breath (dyspnea)
Investigate why you are wheezing
Check for airway narrowing
Spot early lung changes that affect oxygen transfer
Measure the impact of smoking on lung diseases
Decide if medication can help you breathe better
Assess if environmental exposure has harmed your lungs

Determine if you can handle surgery or other procedures

How is it done?

The doctor will place soft clips on your nose to make sure you breathe through your mouth

You will now be required to put your lips around a mouthpiece connected to a spirometer

Now your healthcare provider will ask you to take a deep breath in and then blow out as hard and fast as possible

Body plethysmography

You will wear nose clips and sit in a clear box

The door of the box will be closed for about five minutes

If you feel claustrophobic, tell your provider

You will breathe through a mouthpiece, and the spirometer will measure lung volume changes

Gas diffusion study

You will wear nose clips and inhale and exhale a small, safe amount of carbon monoxide through a mouthpiece

The spirometer measures the amount of carbon monoxide you exhale to see how well your lungs absorb gasses

Cardiopulmonary exercise test

You will be connected to machines that measure your blood oxygen, blood pressure, and heart rate

You will either ride a stationary bike or walk on a treadmill

The machines will measure the efficiency of your heart, lungs, and muscles during exercise
