How To Keep Your Lungs Healthy
We don’t often think about our lungs until there is something wrong with them and we face some breathing problems. While some respiratory disorders like asthma don’t have any known causes, you can still take steps to keep your lungs healthy that can prevent other issues.
Here are some ways you can keep your lungs healthy:
1. Don’t smoke
The best thing you can do for your lungs is actually not doing something - smoking. Cigarette smoking is the number one cause of lung cancer and COPD. When you smoke, you inhale toxic chemicals that harm your lungs. If you are a smoker, you can look up resources that can help you quit smoking.
2. Exercise
Regular physical activity can benefit your lungs too. Exercise involves two major parts of your body - the heart that pumps blood and the lungs that bring in more oxygen to your body. When you exercise your muscles harder and these come into action, your breathing and circulation increase to keep up with the demand. As you continue training, your lungs and heart will become stronger. Even if you suffer from Asthma this is how regular exercising affects it. Here.
3. Avoid pollutants
Whether you are indoors or outdoors, you can take steps to limit your exposure to pollutants. You can make your home smoke-free to avoid secondhand smoke. Air pollution can have long-term effects on your lungs. When you are outdoors and might be exposed to increased levels of air pollution, you can wear a mask.
4. Deep breathing
Simple deep breathing exercises can help improve the health of your lungs, even if you have breathing problems. Breathing deeply from your belly (as opposed to shallow breaths from your chest) can increase the efficiency of your lungs.
5. Prevent infections
Lung infections can lead to serious breathing conditions, especially for those who have weak immunity. You can take some measures to prevent infections such as washing your hands frequently, taking a flu shot during the flu season, and having good oral hygiene.
Breathing problems can’t always be prevented but you can take these simple steps to keep your lungs healthy.
